A good chicken coop keeps your flock safe, comfortable, and productive. Whether you're in a rural area or a suburban backyard, the right coop will provide shelter, nesting areas, and protection from predators. With various styles and features to choose from, you can find a coop that suits your space, flock size, and lifestyle.
There are several styles of chicken coops, each with its own benefits depending on your needs and property layout:

Spacious and easy to access, these coops are ideal for larger flocks and allow you to walk inside for easy cleaning and egg collection.

Includes an attached outdoor run so your chickens can roam safely. Perfect for areas where free-ranging isn't possible.

These triangular coops are compact, stylish, and easy to move, making them great for smaller yards or beginner chicken keepers.

Designed to be lightweight and mobile, so you can rotate your chickens across fresh grass and keep your yard healthy.

Stylish and functional, these coops often mimic a rustic farmhouse design while offering excellent ventilation and space.

Great for urban or suburban settings. These coops are compact and blend well with home landscaping while meeting basic flock needs.
Choosing the right size is essential for your chickens' health. Here’s a general guide:
2–4 Chickens: 4–6 square feet per bird inside the coop
5–10 Chickens: 20–60 square feet of coop space
11+ Chickens: Opt for large walk-in or farmhouse coops with a run
Make sure to also provide 8–10 inches of roost space per chicken and ample nesting boxes (1 box for every 3–4 hens).
Proper airflow is critical for odor control and preventing respiratory issues. Look for:
Adjustable vents
Wire mesh windows with covers
Raised floors to avoid dampness
Insulated walls for extreme climates
A secure coop protects your flock from raccoons, foxes, hawks, and more. Must-haves include:
Heavy-duty wire mesh (not chicken wire)
Lockable doors and latches
Reinforced floors or hardware cloth skirts
Elevated designs for extra safety
Easy maintenance means a healthier flock and less work for you. Look for features like:
Pull-out droppings trays
Large access doors
Waterproof roofing
Removable nesting boxes
Quality materials impact durability and chicken comfort:
Wood: Classic, natural look, great insulation—requires sealing
Plastic: Lightweight, weatherproof, easy to clean
Metal: Durable but can get hot in summer—good for moderate climates
Modern coops may include:
Automatic door openers
Solar-powered lighting
Built-in feeders and waterers
Rollaway nesting boxes for clean eggs
Integrated wheels for mobility
Some coops come pre-assembled, while others require DIY installation. Consider:
Tools needed
Ground leveling
Accessibility for cleaning and egg collection
Sun and shade exposure
Chicken coops range from $150 for a small basic setup to $1,500+ for large walk-in models with advanced features. Trusted brands offer better durability, warranties, and customer support.
To select the best chicken coop:
Count your flock size
Decide if mobility or permanent placement is better
Assess your weather and predator risk
Consider daily chores (egg collecting, feeding, cleaning)
Factor in style, budget, and long-term growth
Investing in the right chicken coop sets the foundation for a happy, healthy flock. Whether you're managing a backyard hobby or a small farm, there’s a coop style perfect for your space. Shop our curated selection at Modern Homestead Co, and don’t forget to use code FLASH5 at checkout for an extra 5% off your order. Your chickens will thank you!

Used this greenhouse all winter in Minnesota and it held up beautifully. On sunny days we still hit 45-50°F inside while outside was 20°F. The base kit and anchor options are solid; just make sure your base is level. Great unit for all-season use.
We chose the 12×16 because we needed more space than 12×12 but couldn’t go full commercial. This Model delivers. The sliding doors are big enough for wheelbarrows and the space is wide enough for dual benches and still a walkway. Setup took about two weekends with help. Minor note: finish work isn’t as slick as premium commercial units — but for the price the value is outstanding.
A wide footprint that works well for multiple growing bays. The Summit 12×12 provides enough width for two full benches and still gives workspace. On hot days the twin-wall panels do heat up inside fast — make sure you have automatic vents or shade cloth ready. Very happy with the quality.
We picked the Summit 12×8 because we’re in a windy zone and needed something built tough.
For anyone considering a large kit, the Elite 8×24 is one of the best out there. You need to plan your base and ancillary equipment carefully (heaters, shade, kits) but if you do, you end up with a huge, functional greenhouse. I'm very happy with mine.
We’ve just assembled the Elite 8×20 and are really impressed. The 10 mm twin-wall panels lock with a solid frame, the 42″ double-doors roll smooth as promised, and even in wind gusts up to 50 mph our structure stayed rock-steady. A solid investment for serious growing.
Upgraded to the Elite 8×16 and the difference is huge. The added length gave us bench space for our seedlings and a dedicated storage zone. The 10 mm twin-wall panels perform amazingly in winter, on sunny days we hit 50 °F inside when it was 20 °F outside. The frame is extremely durable with zero flex. Highly recommend.
The heavy-duty aluminum frame definitely stands out, the insulation value and build quality are top tier.
We bought one. Take some time to assemble, but we finally touch down. For value and quality, we were thoroughly impressed with its performance. Wife love it.
The greenhouse was delivered well. The construction was easy. Once you get it all up it's pretty sturdy. I do recommend the 12 ft since the 8ft is more so for hobbyist.
Perfect for weekend camping trips. It powered my laptop, phone, and even a mini fridge without any issues. The compact design and quick recharge time are big pluses.
I’ve got the batteries installed so far and everything is working great. Still need to set up the two new inverters, but the process has been smooth up to this point. Thank you for the quality products and support!
The setup was very easy, and as soon as I connected my batteries to the controller and switched on the panels, everything worked perfectly. The team at Rich Solar was incredibly helpful throughout the process, making the experience smooth and stress-free. The panels deliver plenty of power, and I’m very impressed with the output. From here on out, I won’t be buying anything other than Rich Solar!
The work on my 1975 GMC Transmode project is moving along nicely! This morning, my son Cory Miller helped me complete the final installation of the 1200-watt solar panel system I purchased from Rich Solar. Everything came together just as planned, and the setup turned out exactly as designed. I’m very pleased with the results and excited to see this classic build powered by solar.
I recently set up my 60 Amp controller panel, and it’s been working great. The installation was straightforward, and the system runs smoothly with no issues so far. I’m very pleased with the quality and performance—it really adds confidence to my solar setup.
