Rainwater harvesting is the practice of collecting and storing rainwater for reuse in gardening, irrigation, and even household use. It's a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to reduce dependence on municipal water sources. From simple rain barrels to complete rainwater harvesting kits, there are solutions to suit every home and budget.
There are several types of rainwater harvesting solutions designed to meet various needs and collection capacities:
1. Rain Barrels

A great starting point for beginners, these are easy to install and perfect for watering gardens or washing outdoor surfaces.

These comprehensive kits include everything needed—tanks, filters, pumps, and piping—for a larger-scale setup, ideal for irrigation, flushing toilets, or even household use (with proper filtration).
Selecting the right capacity is key for maximizing collection and usage:
40–80 gallons: Best for small gardens or patio use.
100–200 gallons: Great for moderate garden watering needs.
500+ gallons: Suitable for whole-yard irrigation or household integration.
Consider your average rainfall, roof area, and water needs when determining capacity.
A complete rainwater harvesting system typically includes:
Catchment Surface: Usually your roof.
Gutters & Downspouts: Direct water to storage.
First Flush Diverter: Filters out debris from initial runoff.
Storage Tank or Barrel: Holds the collected water.
Pump System: Optional for pressurized delivery to irrigation or appliances.
Depending on your use (e.g., garden vs. potable water), filtration can include:
Basic mesh screens (for rain barrels)
Sediment and carbon filters
UV or chemical disinfection systems (for potable use)
Installation can be simple or complex based on your system. Key factors include:
Placement: Position barrels or tanks near downspouts.
Leveling: Ensure a flat, stable surface.
Overflow Management: Direct overflow to a safe drainage area.
Accessibility: Make sure you can easily access for maintenance.
To keep your system working efficiently:
Clean filters and screens regularly.
Inspect and clean tanks seasonally.
Ensure gutters remain clear of debris.
Check for algae buildup or leaks.
Save Money: Reduce your water bill significantly.
Eco-Friendly: Conserve a vital resource and reduce runoff pollution.
Resilient Supply: Use during droughts or water restrictions.
Healthier Plants: Rainwater is often free of salts and chemicals found in tap water.
Some modern systems now include:
Water Level Monitors
Automated Pumps
App-Based Controls
Timers for Irrigation
Choose systems backed by solid warranties (typically 1–5 years) and reliable support. Look for manufacturers that offer detailed setup instructions and responsive customer service.
To select the best system for your needs:
Determine your water usage goals (gardening vs. household)
Calculate your collection potential based on roof area and rainfall
Consider your space for tanks or barrels
Decide if you want a DIY setup or a complete turnkey kit
Investing in rainwater harvesting is a practical, eco-conscious step toward a more self-reliant home. Whether you’re using rain barrels to hydrate your garden or installing a full rainwater harvesting kit, you’ll enjoy long-term savings and environmental benefits. Perfect for weekend camping trips. It powered my laptop, phone, and even a mini fridge without any issues. The compact design and quick recharge time are big pluses.
I’ve got the batteries installed so far and everything is working great. Still need to set up the two new inverters, but the process has been smooth up to this point. Thank you for the quality products and support!
The setup was very easy, and as soon as I connected my batteries to the controller and switched on the panels, everything worked perfectly. The team at Rich Solar was incredibly helpful throughout the process, making the experience smooth and stress-free. The panels deliver plenty of power, and I’m very impressed with the output. From here on out, I won’t be buying anything other than Rich Solar!
The work on my 1975 GMC Transmode project is moving along nicely! This morning, my son Cory Miller helped me complete the final installation of the 1200-watt solar panel system I purchased from Rich Solar. Everything came together just as planned, and the setup turned out exactly as designed. I’m very pleased with the results and excited to see this classic build powered by solar.
I recently set up my 60 Amp controller panel, and it’s been working great. The installation was straightforward, and the system runs smoothly with no issues so far. I’m very pleased with the quality and performance—it really adds confidence to my solar setup.
Used this greenhouse all winter in Minnesota and it held up beautifully. On sunny days we still hit 45-50°F inside while outside was 20°F. The base kit and anchor options are solid; just make sure your base is level. Great unit for all-season use.
We chose the 12×16 because we needed more space than 12×12 but couldn’t go full commercial. This Model delivers. The sliding doors are big enough for wheelbarrows and the space is wide enough for dual benches and still a walkway. Setup took about two weekends with help. Minor note: finish work isn’t as slick as premium commercial units — but for the price the value is outstanding.
A wide footprint that works well for multiple growing bays. The Summit 12×12 provides enough width for two full benches and still gives workspace. On hot days the twin-wall panels do heat up inside fast — make sure you have automatic vents or shade cloth ready. Very happy with the quality.
We picked the Summit 12×8 because we’re in a windy zone and needed something built tough.
For anyone considering a large kit, the Elite 8×24 is one of the best out there. You need to plan your base and ancillary equipment carefully (heaters, shade, kits) but if you do, you end up with a huge, functional greenhouse. I'm very happy with mine.
We’ve just assembled the Elite 8×20 and are really impressed. The 10 mm twin-wall panels lock with a solid frame, the 42″ double-doors roll smooth as promised, and even in wind gusts up to 50 mph our structure stayed rock-steady. A solid investment for serious growing.
Upgraded to the Elite 8×16 and the difference is huge. The added length gave us bench space for our seedlings and a dedicated storage zone. The 10 mm twin-wall panels perform amazingly in winter, on sunny days we hit 50 °F inside when it was 20 °F outside. The frame is extremely durable with zero flex. Highly recommend.
The heavy-duty aluminum frame definitely stands out, the insulation value and build quality are top tier.
We bought one. Take some time to assemble, but we finally touch down. For value and quality, we were thoroughly impressed with its performance. Wife love it.
The greenhouse was delivered well. The construction was easy. Once you get it all up it's pretty sturdy. I do recommend the 12 ft since the 8ft is more so for hobbyist.
